gill experiment upset team balance

Selection committees rarely receive bouquets. More often than not, they attract brickbats. But occasionally, when hard decisions are taken without fear or favour, appreciation is warranted.

India’s T20 World Cup squad selection this time gives that impression — a team chosen with clarity, not clutter. It looks less like a popularity list and more like a unit built for the sharp, unforgiving demands of tournament cricket.

A Course Correction at the Top

The strongest signal of intent lies in the quiet shelving of the Shubman Gill leadership experiment in T20 cricket.

Gill is undeniably a long-term asset for Indian cricket. However, attempting to force him into the T20 format — and into captaincy conversations — was beginning to upset the team’s balance. His presence at the top order was squeezing out more natural T20 players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, and the side was starting to feel that strain.

Stepping back from that path reflects maturity. Leadership potential matters, but not at the cost of team rhythm and role clarity.

Ishan Kishan’s Earned Return

Equally refreshing is the return of Ishan Kishan.

In an era of quick recalls and even quicker exits, Kishan has earned his way back the hard way — through consistent performances in domestic cricket. As a wicketkeeper-opener, he brings aggression, flexibility and tactical options at the top of the order.

His competition with Sanju Samson for a place in the playing XI is exactly the kind of dilemma successful teams want.

Either way, India win.

Backing Leadership Beyond Numbers

The decision to persist with Suryakumar Yadav as captain, despite his recent struggles with the bat, may raise eyebrows. But this is a call that goes beyond statistics.

Suryakumar has shown he can create trust, back players and free them from fear — qualities that matter immensely in a high-pressure World Cup environment. His class has never been in doubt.

Form dips. Class remains.

Indian fans will hope that his touch returns before the tournament and peaks when it matters most.

The Shivam Dube Factor

Shivam Dube remains one of the squad’s unfinished stories.

A powerful hitter and a capable bowling option, Dube offers balance and depth that could prove crucial. The build-up matches should be used to bowl him more. On days when frontline bowlers misfire, a ready sixth option can quietly change a game — or even an entire campaign.

A Squad That Feels Settled

Taken together, this squad feels settled.

Roles are clearer. Selections appear honest. Reputations have not been allowed to override requirements. If preparation matches this selection logic, India has every reason to be confident.

As the World Cup approaches, the hope across the country is simple and heartfelt — that this team plays with freedom, clarity and belief, and gives itself the best possible chance to bring the trophy home again.
