Mumbai: Former France, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho has officially called time on his playing career at the age of 35.
The centre-back, who had been without a club since leaving Georgian side Torpedo Kutaisi in January last year, made the announcement on Monday during PSG’s French Cup round-of-32 clash against Paris FC — another of his former clubs.
Sakho, who came through the Paris Saint-Germain academy and later captained the club, was part of the squad that lifted the 2012-13 Ligue 1 title. He also earned 29 caps for the French national team during his career.
Addressing fans on the pitch before kick-off, Sakho expressed his gratitude before confirming his decision.
“I wanted to thank everyone,” he said.
“I wanted to officially announce the end of my career.”
In 2013, Sakho made a high-profile move to Liverpool, where he spent four seasons before going on to represent Crystal Palace and Montpellier, before ending his professional journey with Torpedo Kutaisi.
A commanding and passionate defender, Sakho leaves the game after a career that saw him compete at the highest levels of club and international football.
