Spain’s tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz etched his name into the history books after defeating Serbian great Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open 2026 men’s singles final. The 22-year-old clinched a memorable 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 victory on Sunday, February 1, to lift the Australian Open trophy for the first time in his career.

Historic milestone for Alcaraz
With this triumph, Alcaraz became the youngest player in the Open Era to complete a career Grand Slam, a remarkable achievement at just 22. Despite losing the opening set as Djokovic showcased his trademark composure, the Spaniard bounced back strongly, seizing control from the second set onward and maintaining his dominance through the remainder of the match.

The four-set battle highlighted Alcaraz’s athleticism, mental strength and tactical maturity, as he outplayed one of the greatest champions the sport has ever seen on the biggest stage in Melbourne.

Missed landmark for Djokovic
For Djokovic, the defeat proved particularly painful. The Serbian legend was chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, which would have seen him surpass Australia’s Margaret Court on the all-time list. Already ahead of rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in major titles, the Australian Open final presented Djokovic with a golden opportunity to stand alone at the top.

However, the turning point came in the fourth set when Djokovic failed to hold serve at a crucial moment, allowing Alcaraz to close out the match and seal the championship.

A new era takes centre stage
The victory marked Alcaraz’s seventh Grand Slam title overall and made him the youngest player ever to win the Australian Open men’s singles crown. As Djokovic fought valiantly until the final point, the night ultimately belonged to the Spaniard—signalling the rise of a new era in men’s tennis as Carlos Alcaraz claimed his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
