India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan made his intentions clear ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after a blistering knock in the warm-up match against South Africa cricket team.
Kishan was promoted to the top of the order and opened the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, with Sanju Samson left out of the playing XI due to poor form. Making full use of the opportunity, the 27-year-old smashed 53 runs off just 20 deliveries, powering India to a massive 240/6 in 20 overs.
India went on to restrict South Africa to 210/7, sealing a comfortable 30-run victory in the warm-up encounter.
‘Wanted to open the innings’
Speaking after the match, Kishan admitted that with the World Cup approaching, he was keen to bat at the top of the order, while reiterating that his focus remains on contributing wherever the team needs him.
“I was really excited. I wanted to open the innings. I enjoyed batting at number three earlier, but with the World Cup coming up, no matter where I bat, my focus is always on doing my best for the team,” Kishan said.
He credited his recent form to staying present at the crease and trusting his instincts.
“I’m not putting too much thought into it. I’m just watching the ball and reacting. Some days you feel really good, some days you don’t. On this day, the pitch was excellent to bat on and I trusted the bounce.”
Praise for Tilak Varma
Kishan also lauded Tilak Varma, who marked his return from a groin injury with a fluent 45-run knock.
“He’s very important to us. He’s not just a batter anymore. He can bowl a few overs, he’s a very good fielder, and at number three you need someone who can rotate strike and keep the momentum going,” Kishan added.
India will open their T20 World Cup campaign on February 7 against United States cricket team at the Wankhede Stadium. The hosts enter the tournament in strong form and will be eyeing their third T20 World Cup title.
