The Indian cricket team will stick to ICC protocol and travel to Sri Lanka for their scheduled T20 World Cup 2026 match against Pakistan, even though the fixture is likely to be called off following Pakistan’s decision to boycott the clash.
According to a report by ANI, India will proceed with all pre-match formalities in Colombo and wait for the match referee to officially abandon the game. The high-profile encounter was slated for February 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
India to follow full match-day procedure
Despite the Pakistan Cricket Board opting out of the match, the Men in Blue are expected to train as per schedule, attend the mandatory press conference, reach the stadium on time and remain there until a formal decision is taken.
“Team India will travel to Sri Lanka and follow ICC protocol. They will practise as scheduled, do the press conference, reach the stadium on time and wait for the match referee to call off the match,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying.
Pakistan, although cleared by their government to participate in the tournament, have decided not to take the field specifically against India, putting the fate of the fixture in doubt.
India likely to receive walkover points
As per ICC playing conditions, if Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha does not appear for the toss, India will be awarded a walkover along with two crucial points. Such an outcome could significantly dent Pakistan’s chances of progressing to the Super 8 stage.
ICC warns PCB over consequences
The International Cricket Council has expressed strong displeasure over Pakistan’s stance and has reportedly urged the PCB to reconsider, warning that the boycott could have serious long-term implications for Pakistan cricket.
“The ICC hopes that the PCB will consider the significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country. This decision is not in the interest of the global game or the welfare of fans worldwide,” the ICC said in a statement.
World Cup campaign begins
India will kick off their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the USA on February 7, while Pakistan begin their journey against the Netherlands on the same day. Both teams are placed in Group A, and with uncertainty surrounding their head-to-head clash, the situation continues to draw global attention as the tournament approaches.
