Mumbai: The standoff between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the 2026 T20 World Cup shows no sign of easing after fresh talks failed to produce a breakthrough.
Senior officials from the BCB, including President Md Aminul Islam, Vice Presidents Md Shakawath Hossain and Faruque Ahmed, Cricket Operations Chairman Nazmul Abedeen and CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, held a video conference with ICC representatives on Tuesday to discuss Bangladesh’s concerns. With less than a month left for the tournament, Bangladesh once again requested that their group-stage matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka, citing “security concerns.”
The ICC, however, maintained that the tournament schedule has already been finalised and urged the BCB to reconsider its position. Despite that, a BCB press release confirmed that Bangladesh has not altered its stance and discussions with the ICC are still ongoing.
The prolonged dispute with India is now beginning to have wider consequences for Bangladesh cricket, particularly on the financial front. According to reports, the ongoing political and cricketing tensions between the two nations are already impacting sponsorship deals involving Bangladesh’s top players.
Cricket equipment manufacturer SG, which sponsors several leading Bangladesh batters including captain Litton Das, has reportedly put contract renewals on hold. In addition, Indian sportswear and equipment brand Sareen Sports Industries (SS) has decided to stop manufacturing its products in Bangladesh, dealing another blow to the country’s sporting economy.
“Their sponsorship contracts were coming up for renewal. That process has been slowed down amidst the current heightened political and cricketing tensions between India and Bangladesh,” a source told the Times of India.
Another source added that the situation has been brewing for some time. “In fact, another leading Indian sports equipment manufacturing company, Sareen Sports Industries (SS) had cancelled the sponsorship contracts of four-five top Bangladesh cricketers last year, when trouble began in Bangladesh. However, things may change if the relations improve between the two countries.”
